Why Is My Labradoodle Not Eating – What Can I Do?

If you are used to your dog eating pretty much anything it can get close to, suddenly having it unable to eat anything can be quite scary, and there can be quite a few different reasons for why it won’t eat.

Why is my Labradoodle not eating? When a Labradoodle won’t eat, it is referred to as anorexia. Because a loss of appetite in Labradoodle could mean illness, it is important to contact a vet if your dog drastically changes it’s eating habits.

But more often than not, there is a perfectly simple reason why you Labradoodle won’t eat, and it is very rarely something life-threatening.

Is Your Labradoodle Not Eating?

All Labradoodles love eating. In fact, they’ll eat just about anything they can get their paws on. It doesn’t matter if it’s dry food, wet food, treats, or the same food that you and I are eating.

It’s not easy to find a dog who is what you could call a picky eater, and the reason for that is that it’s in a dog’s nature to eat anything it can to survive.

So using the explanation that it’s just picky, is most likely never the reason.

There can be quite a lot of other explanations as to why your Labradoodle won’t eat.

But eating either very small amounts or not eating anything at all isn’t always a sign that something life-threatening is wrong with your dog.

Somewhat “simple” things like stress, an upset stomach, or other factors could be one of the different explanations.

But of course, if your Labradoodle won’t anything for more than a day, it would be a very good idea to contact your vet and ask for their opinion.

Especially if you are used to your Labradoodle always having quite a healthy appetite.

There Can Be Many Reasons Why A Labradoodle Won’t Eat!

Some of the possible explanations are a bit more severe than others, so let’s see what some of the reasons could be.

Their Surroundings Have Changed

Perhaps you’ve just moved with your Labradoodle, then it won’t be uncommon for them to skip a meal or two.

At this point, a dog hasn’t fully gotten used to its new home, so it might feel a bit stressed, and not very hungry.

Especially if you have just driven your dog to the new home, as some dogs get motion sickness, which can result in them not having any appetite at all.

Perhaps you’ve only just gotten the dog home from the shelter where you’ve adopted it, then you are very likely to experience your Labradoodle not eating anything.

The Labradoodle has just left everything it has ever known behind, to come with you for a new life, and of course, this can affect its appetite.

Behavior Issues

Perhaps you already have another dog in the house, so when you bring the new Labradoodle home, you attempt to feed it in the territory of the old dog, which might make it react aggressively, and even scaring the new dog.

To prevent this, make sure that you feed both your new Labradoodle and your old dog in designated eating areas, where they have their own private space.

Recently Vaccinated

Another reason why your Labradoodle might not eat can be that you’ve recently taken it to the vet to get a vaccination.

Vaccinating your dog is something you should always do, but that doesn’t mean that there can’t be some side-effects.

One of these side-effects can be that your Labradoodle simply won’t have any appetite for a few hours.

Your dog might be tired and not eat anything, but this isn’t something you should worry too much about unless of course, it lasts more than a day.

If that is the case, contact your vet for their advice.

Medically Related Reasons Could Be The Cause

But every once in a while, having a Labradoodle that won’t eat could be a medical issue, some more severe than others.

One reason could be any of the following.

Upset Stomach

Labradoodles are extremely curious when it comes to food, and will typically eat whatever you put in front of it.

That could even be your socks, underwear, bugs, wood, or perhaps your favorite shoes!

Perhaps you’ve previously given your dog a rope toy, and now it has chewed it into several pieces, and some of those pieces are stuck in your Labradoodles intestines.

This will, of course, upset their stomach and can end up causing pain and discomfort.

Typically a dog won’t want to eat until whatever they ate that was bad has passed through their intestines.

If you notice your Labradoodle vomit or perhaps have diarrhea, it could be a sign that they’re coming down with a gastrointestinal illness.

Contact your vet as soon as possible if you think this might be the cause of why your Labradoodle isn’t eating.

A Dental Disease

One of the more common explanations, when your dog isn’t eating, is dental disease.

If your Labradoodle has an issue with its’ mouth, it could perhaps be a rotten tooth, a cut, or even infected gums, eating anything will typically be quite painful.

Getting your dog checked out at the vet would be a very good idea in that case.

Because dental issues will rarely just go away by themselves, so it could end up lasting several weeks where your dog will barely eat, and that could quickly become a serious issue.

Other Possible Illnesses

A Labradoodle who isn’t eating could also have other severe diseases.

Illnesses such as kidney failure, cancer, liver disease, or even an infection could also be an explanation for a loss of appetite.

If a dog is sick, one of the telltale signs of discomfort is that they will refuse to eat anything.

This is especially true when speaking of older dogs.

If the period where they won’t eat ends up lasting for an extended amount of time, you should contact your vet immediately.

My Labradoodle Won’t Eat! Should I Take them to the Vet?

If you notice that your Labradoodle hasn’t been eating for quite a while, it could be a sign that there is something wrong.

For example, if your Labradoodle has skipped the last two meals, definitely contact your veterinarian and hear their opinion.

If you haven’t changed up their food and turned it into a bland diet, it might be best to take them to the vet, and that leads us to the next section.

Make Your Labradoodles’ Food Interesting Again

Sometimes, Labradoodles will stop eating their food, not because they’re sick, but because they’re tired of having the exact same thing every single time.

If you always got the same tasteless food every single day, there would probably also come a time where you would prefer to just not eat anything at all.

That can also happen with dogs!

If you suspect that this might be the issue and not something more severe such as kidney disease, try changing up your dogs’ diet a bit.

I would recommend that you start giving your Labradoodle tasty — yet healthy! — dog food.

You can always start out by buying small packages and giving your dog some of these new kibbles, to begin with.

If they don’t like that specific flavor, you can always try a new one.

It can be a quite tedious and frustrating experience, but once you find what your dog likes, it will all be worth it.

Because dogs can’t directly tell you what they’re feeling and why they dont feel like eating, it’s up to you to discover the reason.

Hopefully, this post has helped you at least give you an idea of what could be wrong with your Labradoodle, and why it isn’t eating.

Remember that if your dog is skipping more than two meals and they would normally have no problems eating all the time, then something is probably wrong with them.

It could anything from environmental changes, such as changing their surroundings, or something like an illness that could be causing them pain.

In any case, keep an eye out for your Labradoodle and, if they skip too many meals and start to behave lazy and uninterested in whatever food you present them, take them to the vet.

Vets are always your best bet in getting to the bottom of everything and potentially saving your hairy family member.
