Anyone who owns a female Cavapoo whether they intend to breed them should have a good understanding of how heat cycles work for their dog. Why this is important for a variety of different reasons the two main ones are to avoid any litter of puppies that may have been unplanned and the frustration of failed breeding attempts.
Most Cavapoos heat cycles last 3 to 4 weeks. Despite this, most female dogs have little or no interest in breeding within the first few days of the cycle and have a tendency to be far more receptive towards the end of their cycle.
Truth be told if you want to gain a good understanding of your dog and how her heat cycle will affect her life there are many other things you need to know other than just how long it will last. This article will offer some important information on the subject.
How Long Is A Cavapoo In Heat?
When talking about being in heat, in layman’s terms it just means her body is ready to conceive. While being in heat is not a guarantee of conception, it will not happen without it.
Your Cavapoo heat cycle will comprise four distinct phases :
- Proestrus
- Estrus
- Diestrus
- Anestrus.
They commonly refer to the first three stages as the active heat phases. During this time your labradoodles body is being prepared for the potential of conception
Your dog will be naturally most fertile within the first 9 to 13 days following the start of her active heat phase. This high level of fertility will continue for 5 days.
When will my Cavapoo go into heat?
As your Cavapoos gets a little older her body will continue to mature and preparation for reproduction is a natural part of this process. She’ll experience her first heat cycle between the age of 6 to 12 months. Cavapoos due their size when usually mature faster compared to the larger dogs who sometimes experience their first heat cycle as late as 10 months of age.

What happens to your Cavapoo during each stage of her heat cycle?
As we mentioned previously your Cavapoo will experience four distinct faces when she goes into heat these are
#1 The Proestrus phase
During this phase your type of boost body is getting ready for the potential of pregnancy but as yet she is infertile.
Her pituitary gland would squeeze hormones responsible for the development of and growth of follicles. These fluid-filled socks carry her immature eggs and are in your Cavapoos ovaries.
Despite the fact that she may show some early signs of being in heat during this phase. She would not be receptive to any approaches from a male dog who may want to meet with her. As her heat cycle continues, you will see a reddish, pinkish discharge this stage can last anything up to 10 days.
#2 The Estrus phase
During this stage of the heat cycle, your Cavapoo would produce less estrogen and more progesterone to increase the probability of conception. And the early part of the stage her ovaries will release eggs and she is now fertile, making her far more amenable to the approaches of male dogs who attempt to mate with her.
#3 The Diestrus phase
As we mentioned previously, this is the third and final stage of your Cavapoos active heat cycle, and this phase can last for editing from 1 to 2 months and even longer than that. Our progesterone levels will remain high as this is the hormone needed to maintain a healthy pregnancy. She will lose interest in meeting with any male dogs during this phase and also males will lose interest in her.
It is uncommon for her to still experience some bloody discharge, but this gradually starting to dissipate. You will also see her vulva return to what’s considered a normal size. If she has become pregnant during her estrus stage, the stage of the heat cycle will continue until she gives birth to a litter of puppies this can take anything from 60 to 70 days from conception.
#4 The Anestrus phase
This resting stage is the last stage of your Cavapoos heat cycle. She will exhibit little or no activity in her ovaries on the stage and can last anything from 130 to 150 days once the active heat phase is over.
Once her ovarian activity ceases our body will return to normal and will take a timeout from the reproductive cycle. Expect your dog to become a little inactive and she prepares herself for the next pregnancy.
How do I know if my Cavapoo is in heat?
Thankfully, your Cavapoo’s body will undergo some significant changes as it releases an abundance of hormones during its heat cycles. Because of this she wouldn’t exhibit a variety of typical signs that would show that she is going into heat or already in heat.
- She would become far more affectionate. Her breasts become swollen..
- Her vulva will enlarge
- She will urinate more and drink more
- You will see evidence of a bloody discharge
- She will become more clingy
- Her tail flag
- You notice that male dogs may fight over her or follow her around
How often will my Cavapoo go into heat?
This is difficult to answer as the frequency of heat cycles vary from dog to dog. But you can expect the cycle to happen at least once every six to seven months. Heat cycles may come less frequently as your Cavapoo gets older,
At what age will my Cavapoo stop going into heat?
Typically, as a dog matures her ovarian cycle and its activity will decline when she reaches 6 years of age and will become increasingly difficult for her to conceive from 7 years and older.
