Many first-time dog owners reach a dilemma around the time that their puppy reaches 8 to 12 weeks old. Unsure about what to feed a 2-month-old puppy and how often they should be fed.

You should feed a 2-month-old puppy the same thing it has been fed at the breeder, and only then gradually change it to a more fitting diet over the next 2-3 weeks.

What To Feed A 2-Month-Old Puppy?

Understandably, a new four-legged friend is an exciting time for any family, and it’s important to get their feeding and training routine right from the start. Making sure your 2-month-old puppy receives the correct amount of nutrition will take a bit of research.

In this article, we will highlight some basic feeding guidelines for 2-month-old puppies and how you should continue these throughout the first year of their life.

If you have been following a healthy dietary routine for your puppy up to this point, you have been feeding them small amounts of food 4 to 5 times a day. Once they reach 2 months, you can change this regime to feeding them just three times a day. Ideally, your puppy would have stayed with its mother to nurse for the first two months, and now it is time to wean them to solid food.

How to Wean a Two-Month-Old Puppy to Solid Food?

Successfully weaning your two-month-old puppy from liquid to solid food it’s not something that will be achieved overnight, usually, that takes two to three weeks.

First, it’s important to select a high-quality brand of puppy food that you intend to graduate to(we would recommend what we consider to be the best food later in the article). Puppies have very specific nutritional and caloric needs that can only be provided by selecting higher-quality puppy food. Food that provides a healthy source of calories, calcium, and protein is advisable for 2-month-old puppies.

If you have successfully introduced your puppy to solid food at around 5 to 6 weeks, this transitionary period is much easier. If you haven’t, you can still easily transition them by providing a blend of puppy food and milk creating a gruel to feed them three to four times a day.

Every three or four days for the space of the next month, you can gradually reduce the amount of milk and replace it with more dog food. This will allow your puppy to safely transition to solid dog foods without the risk of any gastric issues.

How Often Should I Feed a Two-Month-Old Puppy?

You should feed your 2-month-old puppy three times a day and follow the instructions given to you by your pet food manufacturer in accordance with your puppy’s weight and the quantity of food you should feed them.

Feeding a two-month-old puppy smaller meals regularly will make it much easier to digest their food and also allow them to have access to the energy they need without hitting multiple peaks and lows because of infrequent feeding. This process should continue until they are 6 months of age and then you can reduce your feeding to twice a day.

If you have a mixed breed large dog it’s probably recommended that you continue feeding them three to four times a day for the first year.

Why Do You Need To Switch To Adult Dog Foods?

Due to the fact that a growing puppy has a need for more energy, we want to feed a puppy food that’s full of nutritional supplements and are high in calories.

A general rule of thumb is that larger dogs mature more slowly than smaller dogs. Small dogs of less than 30lbs can mature at 10 to 12 months of age, and even sooner among some toy breeds. If you have a medium dog of up to 80lb, they may not mature until they’re 12 to 16 months old. If you have a larger breed, you may have to wait until they’re two before they reach full maturity.

Similar to your switch to puppy food, you should switch to adult dog food over the space of 2 to 3 weeks by gradually introducing the adult food to their puppy mix to prevent any gastric upset.

The primary reason you need to transition from puppy food to adult food is to ensure your dog remains at a healthy weight. The ability to judge your dog’s overall condition will be important in determining how much you should feed them.

I will not give you any recommendations or guidelines on this, as they will vary from dog to dog and from breed to breed.

Experts recommend you do some research to work out how to calculate your dog’s conditioning score. If you have questions or queries, you can always talk to your vet and they will point out some simple steps you can take, but I hope I’ve at least helped you just a bit in discovering what to feed a 2-month-old puppy.
