must know before getting a Goldendoodle

Must-Know Info Before Getting a Goldendoodle!

Being with a pup is surely one of the best feelings in the world, but different breeds come with their different needs.

And choosing a Goldendoodle can easily be one of your life’s greatest decisions, but with this article, we’re looking at a list of some things current Goldendoodle owners said they wish they had known before getting one.

1. Amount of Grooming and Care Needed

The number one most-voted topic, by far, which current Goldendoodle owners think you should know before you get a Goldendoodle, is the amount of grooming and care needed.

When Goldendoodles first started to become popular, there was a prevalent misconception that the breed needed almost no grooming and was very easy to care for.

But that really isn’t the case, as a Goldendoodle will require quite a lot of grooming and care.

You should anticipate spending at least 15 minutes every day if you want to avoid your Goldendoodles hair getting all matted and tangled up. And having to take your Goldendoodle to a groomer every month can easily become a quite costly affair.

But then it’s a good thing that you don’t have to schedule an appointment with a professional groomer, as I’ve made a grooming guide that can help you save hundreds of dollars every year.

2. Possible Behavior Issues

Goldendoodles are bred from a line of highly active dogs which is why they are also very energetic dogs as well.

If these dogs don’t find a way to release all of their excess energy, they will usually start to develop different unwanted behavior issues.

Some of the problems can be specific issues such as biting everything, jumping on people, and just being quite a handful in general.

A lot of the times this can be corrected through enough, and proper training, but you can also find some cases where the dog can prove to be practically impossible to ever turn into an excellent family dog.

3. The Amount Of Exercise Needed

This point can often be related to the previous point about possible behavior problems.

As mentioned above, Goldendoodles are extremely active dogs and will normally require a minimum of 45 minutes of exercise every day, and often even more!

Make sure that you’re able to satisfy the exercise needs of these dogs before you acquire one, especially when we’re dealing with a dog that’s as packed with energy as a Goldendoodle.

4. Health

Like most breeds of dogs, Goldendoodles are prone to various health issues, and some are obviously more critical than others.

And while many diseases can be cured with a short trip to the vet and a pack of antibiotics, others require long stretches of medication and perhaps also very costly surgery.

Ensure you get decent pet medical coverage on the off chance that you are anticipating getting a dog, as medical procedures can wind up costing a few thousand dollars.

Contact a few pet insurance agencies before you do conclude which to choose, and ensure you get the best coverage and cost.

5. They Aren’t Hypoallergenic

Another common misconception about Goldendoodles is that they’re hypoallergenic.

While you can say that some dog breeds are better than others when it comes to being allergy-friendly, there isn’t any dog that you can say is 100% hypoallergenic, and that also includes Goldendoodles.

So if you suffer from allergies, but are interested in getting a Goldendoodle, try and see if you can find a way to spend a day or two with a dog that is as close as possible to your desired hair type, and notice how you react to that specific dog.

That method is probably your best option for testing if you might get a strong reaction towards the specific type of coat you can find in a Goldendoodle.

6. The Cost of Ownership

Owning any dog can be a pretty costly experience, and a Goldendoodle is no different from many other dogs in that regard.

Even if you take care of something like grooming your dog by yourself, there is a plenitude of costs that you can’t just ignore.

And while this article is geared towards Labradoodle owners, it also applies to Goldendoodles, where you can see that the average cost of owning a Doodle definitely adds up, so be prepared to set aside some cash every month.

7. The Different Hair Types

Goldendoodles can have quite a lot of different styles of hair.

The coat can be either straight, wavy, or curly, and each has pros and cons compared to the other types.

You’ll also find several colors, varying from cream to apricot and red, and everything in between.

So if you’re considering getting a Goldendoodle, you should remember to do your research properly when it comes to the origins of your desired pup, as a method to get the best possible idea of how your dog might look when fully grown.

8. Separation Anxiety

Goldendoodles are generally known for being very affectionate and devoted towards their owners, and with that, there’s also the possibility of your dog getting separation anxiety.

For some pups, the answer can be a crate that the dog can feel happy and comfortable in, and crate training a Doodle usually comes with several benefits!

But for some dogs, a crate isn’t the best solution, so there are other options they can try.

Many buyers report that they have very positive experiences using a so-called anxiety jacket that can be found online for quite a fair price.

Other dog owners prefer using different toys or custom-made pillows that allow your Doodle to relax with something they love and cherish.

These special pillows can be found in numerous different shapes and sizes, and you can see what Amazon offers here if you want to see the currently most popular products.

9. Color Changing

The final point that Goldendoodle owners mentioned, was that Goldendoodles will often change the color of their coats when they get older.

With some Goldendoodles, the color will simply fade as they get older, but some dogs can even have their color change quite dramatically.

So if you get a Goldendoodle you should be prepared that it might not look even remotely the same in a few years as it did when you brought him home as a puppy.
