How to Keep My Labradoodle From Shedding – 4 Easy Steps

Having dog hairs all over the house isn’t something a lot of us enjoy very much, so we’re constantly looking for ways to prevent that from happening.

If you own a Labradoodle, you have probably asked; how to keep my Labradoodle from shedding. This dog will shed quite a bit, and finding it all over the house can be quite annoying. But luckily there are a few things you can do to, if not eliminate, then at least decrease the shedding quite a lot.

And most of those methods are quite cheap and simple thankfully. Let’s have a closer look

How to Keep My Labradoodle From Shedding

Does your Labradoodles’ excessive shedding drive you up the walls? Labradoodles shed. They shed quite a lot actually! And if you’ve ever owned or even been around one of these breeds you will be well aware of that fact.

To be honest, you can’t stop the shedding completely. These dogs are shedders, and trying to get a Labradoodle to stop shedding is like trying to stop the chicken from crossing the road. It’s impossible.

But if it’s impossible to stop your Labradoodles’ shedding, can you at the very least slow it down a bit? Yes, you can.

There are a few simple methods you can do to minimize the shedding so you don’t end up having dog hair all over your home. Let’s have a look at a few ideas that will allow you to enjoy your dogs’ company a lot more.

Brush Your Doodle Regularly

The first method is also the most simple. If you manage to remove the hair before it starts to shed all over your home, the problem becomes a lot more manageable.

You can find a lot of different brushes out on the market. And for a Labradoodle, I would recommend that you use a FURminator Deshedding Tool (Amazon link), as it not only works wonders for removing any unwanted hairs, it’s also extremely easy to clean

  • REMOVES LOOSE HAIR: Will not damage the coat or cut the skin when used as directed.
  • FUREJECTOR BUTTON: Push to release hair with ease.

I would highly recommend that you only brush your dog while you’re outside and upwind instead of inside your home because hairs will start to fly when you do this.

Premium Quality Dog Food

As with us humans’ hair and skin, dogs’ hair typically also reflects their diet. So if your dog is getting stuffed with a lot of low-quality protein and carbs, their coat is much more likely to be frail and at a much higher risk of falling out.

That’s basically a highway directly to Shed Town.

If you’re looking to go a step beyond just what you’re feeding your dog, try to add some form of supplement to your pup’s diet. A product such as the Dream Coat Meal Enhancement can be a great addition to their diet if your dog’s issues are directly linked to a lack of nutrients. Dream Coat is one of the top products you can get, and it’s also quite cheap in my opinion.

I’ve even experienced quite picky eaters that love to gobble up this supplement without any issue.

You can also fix a lot of issues with shedding if you go for the best possible dog food you can get. After I switched my food product of choice, my Doodles’ shedding has gone down by a substantial amount.

Shampoo Designed to Minimize Shedding

The market for anti-shedding shampoo is booming. And every single product promises to fix all your problems in no time. That should be your first warning sign that something isn’t completely believable.

After having tried and tested more than a dozen shampoos over the years, I’ve finally found a product that actually helped to decrease the shedding from my dog.

It was first suggested to me by a professional groomer in my neighborhood. It is called FURminator Deshedding Shampoo for Dogs and Cats (Amazon link).

Furminator deShedding Shampoo for Dogs and Cats, 16 Ounces
  • Promotes healthy skin and coat to reduce excess shedding
  • Enriched with Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids loaded with vitamins and proteins
  • Perfect on both cats and dogs
  • Non-drying, non-irritating hypoallergenic formulation
  • Used and recommended by veterinarians and professional groomers worldwide

I have used this shampoo quite a few times before I finally started seeing a decrease in the amount of hair we seemed to find in our home and our garage. Of course, I expected the shampoo to work after using it just one time, but those kinds of miracles don’t happen in real life. So don’t be discouraged at first, keep trying, and I’m certain you’ll see results in the end.

A good idea before you put your dog in a bath is that you remove all the dead hair you possibly can with a premium-quality brush such as the FURminator.

Then you get your dog into the bath and soap him up real good. Then you just let it sit for around 5 minutes, while you try to keep your dog occupied and not zoom around your home. Good luck with that…

When the shampoo has had a chance to work itself into the hair, you should give your pup a thorough rinse before you towel him off. And finally, you should give your dog one last comb-over with your shedding brush.

You should now expect quite a large difference in the amount of dog hair you can find flying around your home.

Try Some Supplements

My mother previously had a dog where the backyard breeder she got it from didn’t remove the dewclaws, so when she had her dog neutered, she also had to pay more than $150 to have all of the four dew claws removed. As an added expense through the years, her dog has had more hip surgeries than my mom has at 68 years old. And for now, I’m not even going to tell about the severe allergies her dog also suffers from.

My point here is that, while trying to fix the allergies, my mom experienced that a supplement surprisingly enough significantly reduced the shedding from her dog. I didn’t really believe her to begin with, but after visiting her one time where the dog was basically sleeping on me for an hour, I was quite surprised by just how small amounts of hair I had on me afterward. So if you’re looking for a little something that might help reduce shedding, you could experiment with some of the many possible vitamin supplements.

The one my mom used with great success was the Zesty Paws Aller-Immune Bites. (Amazon link)

Labradoodles do shed, there is no way around it. But that doesn’t mean you’re powerless to do anything about it, to make your life just a bit easier. Try just one or two of the methods I’ve mentioned above, and I can almost guarantee you will see results before long.
