How Fast Can A Labradoodle Run?

I love throwing balls or discs with my Labradoodle, and watching him sprint made me curious to find out how fast a Labradoodle actually could run.

A young and healthy Labradoodle can outrun most humans and is able to sprint at over 35 miles per hour for short periods of time.

You don’t have to race your Labradoodle many times before finding out that you’re never going to win a race against it.

But measuring the speed by myself would be quite the hassle, so I decided to see what kind of information I could find online.

Measuring The Speed Of a Labradoodle

While on my quest to find out exactly how fast my Labradoodle is, I started to think about how I was going to figure out the number.

Seeing as the average Labradoodle will easily outrun even the fastest runner on their morning jog I wasn’t exactly able to just run beside it with my phone out.

Labradoodles don’t have a problem keeping up with your energetic teenager when they take them for a run alongside their bicycle either.

So how do we find out just how fast they are able to run?

I found that there were a few different sources for this information.

First was the “authority” sources from different dog breeders, a few magazines, and other vague sources I found.

But I also managed to find info from people who have actually done the legwork themselves and clocked their Labradoodle.

And seeing as I believe that either source is just as valuable as the other, I would rate the information as equal.

So here’s what I found out:

Authority sources on the subject mention that they can reach speeds between 30 and 40 miles per hour, which is a pretty wide margin.

However, these sites also mention that “most” Labradoodles in average shape can run at speeds between 25-30 miles per hour.

But I wanted to find some results for myself.

So I contacted some Labradoodle owners I know and in different online groups.

And I actually got 8 different speed readings, which is pretty great.

Let’s have a look at the results of the 8 tests:

Since the main interest of this article was finding out the maximum speed that a Labradoodle can run, it is safe to say the maximum is around 35 mph.

Of course, this is also highly dependent on the conditioning, age, and general health of each dog.

What Affects The Speed Of A Labradoodle

Obviously, it is not just the breed of the dog that matters when it comes to speed.

And since a Labradoodle is a mixed dog, one can be quite different from another.

Amongst humans, you can have very athletic people who exercise all the time and are extremely fast, but there are also have people who never go for a run.

It’s the same thing in the dog world.

If your Labradoodle is physically well-trained and very accustomed to physical activity, it’s going to be very beneficial to them when it comes to running.

Consider taking your Labradoodle with you for a daily jog.

Doing that is not only going to help develop their muscles but also their heart and lungs as well.

This is probably the biggest factor in determining the top speed of your Labradoodle.

Somebody might be able to clock their Labradoodle at 25 mph while another owner might clock their’s at 35 mph.

The main difference is usually always conditioning.

Making sure that your dog is as fast as possible requires that you keep them well-trained, healthy and that you make sure they get plenty of exercise.

But of course, it’s not only about the physical conditioning of your dog.

Other major factors that have an effect on the top speed of a dog are the surface the dog is running on, how are their paws, and exactly how much is the dog investing in that particular race.

Comparing Labradoodles To Other Races

The average speed at which dogs can sprint ranges between 15 and 20 mph.

At 35 mph, the Labradoodle is considered to be pretty fast.

And if we try and compare the Labradoodles speed to other popular large dog breeds, here’s how the speed of the Labradoodle compares:

Siberian Husky 30 mph
Boxer 30 mph
Labrador Retriever 35 mph
Golden Retriever 35 mph

So we can see that the speed of a Labradoodle is in the higher end compared to the dogs of the same size.

The fastest recorded dog breed is the Greyhound, which has been clocked at speeds in excess of 45 mph.

Can You Outrun a Labradoodle?

Well, no.

Usain Bolt is the fastest human ever recorded, and he currently holds the 100-meter and 200-meter world records.

In 2009, Usain Bolt set the world record for humans at 27.5 mph.

Although Usain Bolt impressively fast in the human world, when compared to a Labradoodle, he wouldn’t really stand a chance in a race.

So just by looking at speed alone, you won’t be able to outrun a Labradoodle.

Not even if you are in peak physical condition and the Labradoodle chasing you are in very poor physical condition.

If you ever find yourself in a situation where you have to run away from a Labradoodle, your best bet would be to find something to block its’ path.

So climb onto a tree, into your car or anything like that.

Just jumping over a small fence and expecting that the dog won’t be able to follow you would be a mistake, as they are able to jump quite high also.

But the chances of you finding yourself in such a situation should be extremely slim, as Labradoodles are usually very friendly, and is often considered to be the perfect family dog.

Exercising Your Labradoodle

If you want to have your Labradoodle as a running partner, there are a couple of ways you can make sure its’ condition is as great as possible.

First of all, it is not advised to take your dog running until it is at least 18 months old.

A puppy’s bones and joints need to be strong enough before you really start with this kind of physical conditioning, and that is considered to be when a dog is 18 months old.

By nature, a Labradoodle is a dog that loves retrieving items, and this is a perfect way of exercising them.

Let’s look at a few different options if you want to train your Labradoodle for running:

Play Fetch – If possible find a large open space like a park, or if you have a big garden. Playing fetch is all about high-intensity training and interval sprinting, which is excellent to really get the muscles and cardiovascular system working.
Going For a Jog – This is good both for you and your dog. Just remember to not begin before the dog is 18 months old.
Proper Diet – A good healthy diet is also of the utmost importance. Buy top quality dog food and generally making sure your Labradoodle is healthy and lean not only improves their physical condition but also their general happiness.

As with everything, start slowly when exercising your dog, and then turn up the pace as your Labradoodle becomes stronger and stronger.

And although most things are easier to train with a puppy than a grown dog, running and sprinting isn’t one of those things.

It is very important that you do not start heavy physical training before your dog is 18 months old.
