4 Reasons Why Owning a Dog Will Improve your Health

Considering getting a dog, or perhaps you already own one? You should read about these 4 amazing benefits to your health being a dog owner.

Dogs Are Also Your Health’ Best Friend

It doesn’t matter if you’re only considering getting a dog, already own one, or just loves dogs in general, you should know about some of the health-related advantages a dog can bring to your life.

1. Dog Owners Are Less At Risk Of Developing Allergies

A lot of families will choose to not get a dog, due to a fear of allergies, but why is that actually? In a study in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology from 2011, researchers concluded that children who grew up with one or more dogs in the home, had a smaller risk of developing any allergies later in life, compared to kids who grew up in a home without any dogs.

The study also showed that children who grew up with cats in the home had a larger risk of developing allergies later in life.

What this shows is that a fear of getting any allergies to pets, shouldn’t hold you back from getting a dog – on the contrary!

2. Dog-Owners Generally Have A Better Health Overall

In a 10-month study in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, researchers tested the health-related behavior of a group who were pet owners and a control group who didn’t own pets.

The study showed that the pet owners showed signs of health-related improvements in both their physical shape and overall behavior just one month after owning any pet, compared to the control group who didn’t show any signs of improvements in both their physique or behavior through the 10 months the study took.

3. Dog Owners Have A Better Mental Health

In the same study done by the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, researchers were able to conclude that pet owners also experience many psychological advantages. In this study, 217 people had to answer several questions regarding their mental health, type of personality, and connection with other people.

This revealed that pet owners were, on every single occasion, happier, healthier, and a lot more well-adapted when compared to those people who didn’t own any pets. According to the researchers, this is probably due to the fact that pets are able to function as personal support to their owners.

4. Dog-Owners Get A Lot More Exercise

It goes without saying that you as a dog owner can expect to go on walks several times a day, so you will move around a lot more than people with a dog. But this isn’t the only reason why dog owners get more exercise than those without pets.

A study from the National Institute of Health and Welfare actually shows that dog owners will be active for at least 30 minutes 5 days a week more than any other person.
