Heavier dogs tend to be more obedient than lighter dogs.
Dogs owned by women are less aggressive toward strangers.
Dogs that are walked on a daily basis by their owners are less aggressive.
And Bulldogs, Shih Tzus, Pugs, and other short-snouted breeds are generally slightly more disobedient than medium- to long-snouted breeds such as Golden Retrievers or caramel-colored mixed breeds that are popular in Brazil.
These are some of the findings presented in an article published in the journal Applied Animal Behaviour Science.
Is Dog Aggression Inherited or Learned

The researchers behind the study from the University of São Paulo, have examined 665 dogs of different breeds and mixed breeds, as well as the dogs’ owners.
The study’s results confirm the researchers’ hypothesis that a dog’s behavior is not only learned or influenced by genetics but is also the product of ongoing interaction with its environment.
“Environment and the owner-dog relationship, as well as morphology (body shape, ed.), are factors that affect how animals interact with us and how we interact with them.”
– Briseida de Resende, a professor at the University of São Paulo, to Phys.org.
The researchers also found a correlation between a dog’s weight and aggressiveness toward its owner – the heavier the dog, the less aggressive.
Dog aggression has traditionally been associated with its breed, but over the past 10 years, there has been a paradigm shift. Research now links a dog’s behavior more to factors such as age, gender, metabolism, and hormones.
