Dog Owners Beware! Dangerous Illness Spreading Quickly Now

Kennel cough is particularly widespread right now, so you should be aware of symptoms in your dog.

Just as it is flu season for us humans, we are now entering the season for the contagious kennel cough among dogs.

Kennel cough is an infectious respiratory virus transmitted through moisture droplets.

The cough spreads from dog to dog, and the infection can survive outdoors for up to an hour. Therefore, there is a particular risk of your dog getting infected in places where many people walk their dogs.

You can significantly reduce the risk of infection by having your dog vaccinated annually. The vaccine does not protect against all variants, but it does protect against the most common ones.

Should the unfortunate happen and your dog starts coughing, the disease is fortunately not dangerous in itself, and in most cases, it does not require treatment.

It can sound very severe, and some even think the dog has something stuck in its throat. Fortunately, the symptoms are limited to coughing.

Nevertheless, you should keep an eye on your dog if it gets the disease.

Secondary illnesses such as pneumonia can occur, and that is more dangerous. Symptoms of that can include the dog becoming lethargic, losing appetite, developing a fever, and losing interest in physical activities. In that case, you should take it to a veterinarian.

The disease only spreads among dogs and is therefore not dangerous for humans. However, you should take some precautions if your dog starts coughing.

The disease can be contagious for about 14 days after the dog stops coughing, so during that time, you should take walks where there aren’t many other dogs. This way, you can help contain the spread.
